Death of a Child

Nearly 40,000 children die each year in the United States (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention/National Center for Health Statistics, 2009a). Causes of death vary by age (see Table 9.2. Leading Causes of Death by Age). A family-centered approach to care considers the impact of the child's death on all members of the family, for because the family is a system, each member's response will resonate with others.
